Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2018

  • Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE) is one of the most competitive examinations for pursuing a postgraduate course in engineering.
  • The degree awarded to the candidates after completion of a postgraduate course will either be M.tech, M.E or M.S.
  • GATE acts as a judging medium, qualifying students to gain entry into top M.tech/M.E colleges like IITs, IIITs, NITs in India.
  • The GATE examination is often conducted by the IISc or IIT institutes.
  • IIT Guwathi is going to conduct the GATE examination in February 2018.
  • Candidates have two options after obtaining their GATE score-
    • Candidates can gain admission into any institutes offering postgraduate courses like M.Tech, M.E or M.S
    • Candidates can apply for a job in a various Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) that recruit based on GATE scores. The various PSUs are ONGC, NTPC, Indian Oil Corporation, HPCL, BPCL, Power Grid etc.
    • A candidate can also pursue a doctoral program, Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)  in any of the Indian Institute of Management(IIMs) with their GATE score.      
  • The exam comprises of two types of questions, Numerical and Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs).

  • Indian national candidates are eligible to appear in GATE 2018.

The Age Limit for the Candidates for GATE 2018:

  • There is no age limit for GATE applicants.

Education Qualification Criteria for GATE 2018:

  • The candidate must possess Bachelor Degree i.e. B.Tech/ B.E./B.Pharm/ B.Arch from a recognized University.
  • The candidates having Master’s Degree in from any stream Mathematics/ Science/ computer or equivalent or Statistics or Five years B.S./ M.S. Progam or M.Tech or M.E. after BSc. Can also apply.
  • the final year candidates can also apply for exam provided they have to submit the certificate from the Principal of University or College.
  • The candidates, who have passed the qualifying examination, have to submit their certificate or degree certificate or provisional certificate.
  • Diploma Holders are not eligible for the examination.

  • Main Purpose: This is the main process to get an entry in the examination hall for GATE 2018.
  • How to Download: The candidates should have to visit official GATE website to download the admit card.

Valid Identity proof along with the GATE 2018 Admit Card:

  • For Indian students: Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar UID, Valid College ID, Employee identification card or Driving License.
  • For International students: Valid Passport/ Government issued ID/College ID/ Employee ID.

Steps to Download the GATE 2018 Admit card is given below:

  • Go to the official website for GATE 2018.
  • Click on the link provided to download the admit card.
  • Log in using the ID and password provided.
  • Click on submit to view the admit card.
  • Download and print the admit card and retain till admission. 

Note: The GATE 2018 admit card is sometimes required for M.Tech admissions or PSU recruitment. Therefore candidates are advised to keep a copy safe.

GATE 2018 Exam Centers

  • The GATE 2018 is a national level entrance examination.
  • GATE 2018 conducts at 199 exam centers will be available across the country.
  • Candidates have to select any three exam centers while filling the application form.

GATE 2018 Exam Pattern

  • Main Purpose: This is the process through candidates will get to know about the scenario and the Blue Print of the exam pattern.
  • GATE 2018 exam pattern contains a question paper pattern, a number of questions asked, marking scheme and more.

The GATE 2018 entrance examination pattern:

  • Mode of Examination: Computer Based Test (CBT) 
  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Question type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions
  • Number of Questions: The exam consists of 65 questions including 10 questions from General Aptitude.
  • Marking Scheme: The questions will have weightage of 1 and 2 marks.
  • Negative Marking: 1/3 marks to be deducted for incorrect responses in the questions carrying 1 mark. 2/3 marks to be deducted for incorrect responses in the questions carrying a weightage of 2 marks. There is no negative marking for NAT questions.
  • New Section: In XE paper, new section (H) - Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences has been included from the year 2017 onwards.

Note: Only MCQs will have negative marks.

GATE 2018 Results

GATE 2018 Results Summary

GATE 2018 result Dates:

  • The result for GATE 2018 will be declared on or before 17th March 2018.
  • The qualifying mark s will be displayed in the result along with the score and All India Ranks obtained by the candidate.
  • Candidates will have to log in to GOAPS and access their GATE result 2018

Steps to check GATE 2018 Results:

  • Candidates have to visit the official site of GOAPS.
  • Select Get Result option and select GATE 2018 results in the next page.
  • Login to the account and enter Application number, Date of Birth and Verification code.
  • Select submit and the result page will be displayed.
  • Take the printout of the GATE result and retain it till admission process.

GATE 2018 Counselling

Counselling Summary for GATE 2018

  • After the declaration of result of the GATE 2018,  no counseling and admission process will be conducted.
  • For admission, valid GATE score card will be considered at all IITs, NITs, and IISc Bangalore.
  • Seats will be allotted to the candidates as per the ranking and his/her preferred choice of course.
  • The counseling for selected candidates who have applied on the basis of GATE at all IITs and IISc Bangalore will consist of document verification and payment of the prescribed fees.
  • Based on the student's preference, the seat will be allocated.

The process of Online Counselling for GATE in different Institutes:

  • For admission in IITs: To get admission in IITs candidates will have to register at COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) and the respective IIT and M.Tech programme.
  • For admission in NITs, IIITs & GFTIs: the counseling will be conducted through Centralised Counselling for M.Tech (CCMT) to get admission in NITs, IIITs & GFTIs.
  • For IISc Bangalore, it will be conducted before GATE 2018 result announcement.
  • For State Universities, it will be conducting the counseling on different dates starting from the month of March till July 2018

The documents candidates should bring along with them for GATE 2018 counseling are as follows:

  • Class X Board Certificate as a proof of date of birth or any age proof certificate
  • Community Certificate (for SC/ST only)
  • Mark sheet of qualifying examination (if available)
  • GATE 2018 Result.
  • Nativity Certificate.
